A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

In this animated journey for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
