Growing up, I never owned Nintendo's Wii system. Certainly, I experienced Wii Sports along with several major releases while staying with family and friends back in that era, however I missed owning the console myself, which resulted in skipping several excellent installments within classic Nintendo game lines.

Innovative Physics Mechanics

As a space nerd, the backdrop is right up my alley, permitting Super Mario Galaxy to experiment with planetary forces. Round structures let Mario to literally run circles around them similar to Goku pursuing Bubbles in popular series. With nearby platforms, he can jump between them getting captured by the gravity of a nearby platform. Different stages feature flat circular shapes, frequently containing rewards underneath, where you may not think to look.

Meeting Familiar Faces

The pleasure in engaging with Galaxy after nearly two decades includes knowing certain personalities. I was unaware Rosalina originated through this adventure, and that she became the caring guardian of the Lumas. Before playing Super Mario Galaxy, I only knew her as a frequent choice Mario Kart World character selection. Similarly with Penguins, with whom I appreciated aquatic sections through introductory ocean area.

Movement-Based Hurdles

The primary drawback during this adventure currently involves motion features, which are used for gathering, targeting, and firing cosmic pieces, bright collectibles scattered around levels. Using portable mode involved moving and adjusting the Switch around to direct, seeming somewhat awkward. Gyroscopic elements feature heavily within various navigation areas, where you have to aim the star-shaped cursor at platforms to attract Mario in their direction.

Levels that wholly require movement inputs are best played with independent remotes improving control, including the aquatic gliding mission in the beginning. I haven't typically been a fan of motion controls, and they haven’t aged particularly smoothly throughout Galaxy. Luckily, when acquiring adequate stars via alternative missions, these gyroscopic sections might be entirely bypassed. I attempted the stage featuring Mario maneuvering a giant ball across a path filled with gaps, then immediately quit following single try.

Timeless Mario Excellence

Apart from the clunky Wii-era input methods, there's virtually nothing to criticize within this adventure, while its cosmic stages provide enjoyment to navigate. Although notable titles like Super Mario Odyssey launched later, Super Mario Galaxy stays among the finest and most inventive Mario titles available.
